Abstract

890,458. Cold separation of gas mixtures. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Dec. 14, 1960 [Dec. 14, 1959], No. 42413/59. Class 8(2). A low temperature gas mixture e.g., air separating plant 1 is continuously operated to satisfy a fluctuating demand for gaseous oxygen discharged through a duct 2 by condensing the excess oxygen gas during a low demand period in an exchanger 5 cooled by an auxiliary liquefied gas of lower boiling point e.g., separated nitrogen stored in a container 6, storing the condensed oxygen in a container 9 and revaporizing it during a high demand period in an exchanger 12 warmed by nitrogen gas withdrawn from the plant 1 and compressed at 15 to a pressure above that at which liquid nitrogen is vaporized in exchanger 5 during a low demand period and feeding nitrogen condensed in the oxygen revaporizor 12 after expansion at a valve 16 and separation in a chamber 17 to the liquid nitrogen container 6. The cold content of the flashed nitrogen in chamber 17 is used to condense nitrogen withdrawn from the inlet side of the compressor 15.
