Abstract
893,952. Charging two-stroke engines. DE HAVILLAND ENGINE CO. Ltd. May 21, 1958 [May 21, 1957], No. 16114/57. Class 7(2). To assist the action of a charging or scavenging device as described to help induction of air or combustible mixture into a crankcase compression space (not shown), subatmospheric pressure momentarily occuring in an exhaust duct 15 is transmitted via a rotary valve 17 and a duct 19 to the space when it and its transfer ducts 14 are sealed off by the engine piston from the cylinder 11 and before its inlet ports are opened by the engine piston. Particularly in a diesel engine, the valve 17 and duct 19 are replaced by a one-way valve, reservoir and rotary valve in series or by a reservoir alone. Instead of a crankcase compression space, the working chamber of a piston scavenging pump or the delivery space of a scavenging pump or blower may be acted on in the manner of the invention.
