Abstract
Textile materials are rendered water-repellent by treating in the presence of water with a mixture comprising (a) a compound R-Z-NH-CH2-O-R1, where R is an alkyl group containing 12 to 25 carbon atoms, Z is -CO-, -NH-CO-or -O-CO-, and R1 is H, or an alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or an alkyl group containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms and 1 or 2 hydroxyl groups, or an ether thereof in which at least part of the hydroxyl groups is etherified with an alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms (b) a methylol compound of melamine or urea containing more than one methylol group per molecule bound to nitrogen (c) a cationic emulsifying agent containing nitrogen and obtained by reacting a polyamine, which contains at least three amino groups per molecule each containing at least one hydrogen atom, with urea, nitrourea or an alkali metal cyanate, reacting the product as obtained with an aliphatic compound consisting of a hydrocarbon radical of 12 to 25 carbon atoms which is bound to a -COOH, -CO-O-CO-, -CO-Hal, -CO-N3, -NH-CO-CI, -N = C = O, -O-CO-CI, -NH-CH2OH or -O-CH2Cl group, and reacting the product with formaldehyde to yield a product which is at least partially substituted by N-methylol groups, and (d) an acidic hardening catalyst, and heating for a short time. The compound (a) may be N-methylol-stearamide, N-methylol-N1-octadecyl-urea, N-methylol-octadecyl-urethane or an alkyl ether of any of these containing 1-6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group. The compound (b) may be hexamethylol-melamine or dimethylol-urea. The compound (c) may be made by reacting diethylene triamine with urea, then with octadecyl isocyanate or stearyl chloride and then with formaldehyde. The substance (d) may be a weak organic acid or may be an acidic salt of a strong acid with a weak base, e.g. aluminium sulphate, ammonium chloride or ammonium nitrate. The mixture may also contain a mineral oil, a chlorinated paraffin, a paraffin wax, a wax, a silicone or aluminium stearate. The impregnation liquor may be prepared by adding the emulsifying agent (c) to an aqueous solution of the methylol compound (b), and grinding in a ball mill with an N-methylol fatty acid amide. Alternatively the N-methylol fatty acid amide and emulsifying agent are stirred into an aqueous solution of the methylol compound (b). The product in either case is a paste, which may be diluted with water, have its pH adjusted with an acid, and have the catalyst (d) added. Specification 868,080 is referred to.
