901,082. Dielectric heating of thermoplastic sheet material. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS Ltd. Dec. 20, 1960 [Jan. 22, 1960], No. 2404/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group VIII] A process for seaming thermoplastic sheet material by high-frequency dielectric heating, comprises intermittently applying heat simultaneously at a plurality of " spots," the material being moved relative to the source of heat in the periods between the application of heat, and controlling the duration of each intermittent application of heat by electronic means determining the duration of each period of oscillation of the circuit supplying the high-frequency current. The period of oscillation may be determined by an electronic timing mechanism and pressure may be applied to the material at the instant of heating. The seaming is done preferably between a pair of electrodes at least the upper one of which has a plurality of material contacting protuberances for simultaneously making a number of welds. The upper electrode is preferably reciprocable and is spring-loaded to exert a predetermined pressure on the material.
