Abstract

A flame resistant polymeric material is obtained by incorporating into the material, while it is still insufficiently polymerized to form a wholly solid polymer, a minor proportion of a mixture of a halogenated ethylenically unsaturated compound and a halogenated ester of phosphoric acid and polymerizing to a solid polymer. Up to 5% of antimony oxide may be included in the mixture of halogenated compounds. Specified components are: polymers:- polystyrenes and copolymers of styrene with acrylonitrile and methyl- and polymethyl-methacrylate, and polyvinyl chloride; unsaturated compounds:- vinylidene chloride, polyvinyl chloride and chloroprene; esters:-the brominated phenyl-, cresyl-, and xylenyl-phosphates and tris(2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate.ALSO:A flame resistant expandable polymeric material is obtained by incorporating into the material, while it is still insufficiently polymerized to form a wholly solid polymer, a minor proportion of a mixture of a halogenated ethylenically unsaturated compound and a halogenated ester of phosphoric acid and polymerizing to a solid polymer. Up to 5% of antimony trioxide may be included in the mixture of halogenated compounds. Specified components are: polymers:- polystyrenes and copolymers of styrene with acrylonitrile and methyl and polymethyl methacrylate, and polyvinvyl chloride; unsaturated compounds:-vinylidene chloride, polyvinyl chloride and chloroprene; esters:- the brominated phenyl-, cresyl-, and xylenylphosphates and trio (2, 3 dibromo propyl) phosphate. The polymer is powdered, pre-expanded in steam, then placed in a mould in hot water for final expansion.
