Data transfer between the buffer stores of elements of a computer, such as input and/or output teleprinter converters 4-6, tape input unit 9, arithmetic unit 3 and magnetic drum store 2, takes place over a common channel 7, the units being called in turn by an allotter 1 and themselves being capable of calling up other units and programming the transfer of data. Timing may be controlled by clock (" synchronizing ") pulses from the drum passed via line 8 and the allotter to one of ten lines forming the channel 7, or by the timing of the unit involved (e.g. the tape reader, which operates at a lower speed). Data characters are transmitted as bits over seven lines in parallel (including a redundancy bit), and a " busy " line suspends the operation of the allotter while the channel 7 is in use. The drum store 2 is able to cut off the synchronizing pulses until a required sector for sending or receiving data has reached the corresponding head.
