Abstract

A process for improving the capacity for taking up dyestuffs of crystalline poly-alpha-olefins comprises dissolving therein 2 to 10% by weight of the polyolefins of a polybasic carboxylic acid soluble in hydrocarbon oils, insoluble in water, having a molecular weight of 500 to 3000 and remaining substantially undecomposed when heated to 250 DEG C. The polyolefin may be polypropylene. Specified polybasic acids are the dimer and trimer of linoleic acid. The solutions may be formed by processes comprising (a) stirring the acid in the molten polyolefin or (b) coating polyolefin chips by tumbling with the acid in a drum or spraying with a solution of the acid in a volatile solvent, and fusing the coated chips to a homogenous melt. The polyolefins may be extruded to form filaments and dyed. Specification 810,023 is referred to.
