Abstract
907,173. Making crown closures; cutting out and stamping; metal strip feeds. DANIELI, G., REY, G., and FE, A. April 17, 1959, No. 13122/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A device for the continuous production of crown caps from a band each cap having a shear tongue turned over into a recess therein comprises a multiple sub press mechanism formed by dies and punches shaped to successively form a tongue, fold the tongue backwards through 180 degrees and stamp out a disc including said folded tongue and form said disc into a crown cap. The sub press mechanism comprises a die plate 1 secured to the machine frame 1b and a punch plate 2 secured to the press ram the plates being held in alignment by guide rods la. The metal strip N is fed from a reel 8 through buffers 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> which lubricate the strip which then enters a guide channel 5 into which it is pressed by a roller 6 before passing into the die plate 1 where it rests on resilient supports 7. The strip is located transversely by spring-loaded plungers 9a situated on one side of the strip and by projections 8a on the other side of the strip the projections being provided on one side 8 of the guide channel 5. The mechanism has three punches A, B and C which operate simultaneously at each stroke of the press and co-operate with respective dies in the die plate 1 to: (A) shear the outline of the tearing tongue L and slightly lift its free end and punch a control hole R on the strip outside the outline of the crown closure: (B) stamp two parallel shearing lines P on the strip and lift the closure tongue into a position at 90 degrees to the strip (L<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 9) and during subsequent feed of the strip bend back the tongue to position L<SP>11</SP> about 60 degrees to the strip; (C) punch out the closure, turn over the closure tongue and form a recess in the closure to receive it, cup and form corrugations in the crown closure. During the B and C operations the strip is locked against movement by a pin on the punch engaging the control hole R in the strip. The finished and detached crown closure falls through an opening 12 at the end of the guide channel into a receptacle (not shown). The step by step feeding device for the strip is operated from the crank-shaft S of the press by means of an adjustable rod 15 the ends of which are eccentrically mounted on discs 13, 16. Adjacent the disc 16 and coupled thereto is a further disc 18 (Fig. 4) to which is eccentrically coupled a toothed gripping pawl 19. At the end of the pawl is a transverse pin 19b which engages in a groove 20a in a guide 20 (Fig. 2). In operation an oscillatory movement is imparted to the discs which causes the gripper pawl to reciprocate and feed the strip step by step through the mechanism.
