Abstract
Copolymers of tetrahydrofuran and olefin oxides of comparatively low molecular weight are prepared by polymerizing in the presence of a tertiary oxonium salt of hydrofluoboric acid as catalyst and a carboxylic acid orthoester, or an acetal or alcohol as molecular weight regulator. The catalyst is added in the form of boron trifluoride etherate of tetrahydrofuran which disproportionates to give the tertiary oxonium salt of HBF4 and a boric ester. Suitable regulators are orthoformic acid trimethyl ester, orthoacetic acid trimethyl ester, orthocarbonic acid tetramethyl ester and the ethyl esters; formaldehyde and acetaldehyde dimethyl and diethyl acetals, and formaldehyde methyl ethyl acetal; methanol, ethanol, propanol, ethylene glycol and benzyl alcohol. Specified olefin oxides are ethylene-, propylene-, butylene-, styrene- and phenoxy propene oxides and epichlorhydrin, and mixtures may be used (Example 2). The ratio of the monomers may be varied widely, e.g. from 10 to 90 mol. per cent of each. The quantity of catalyst may be from 1 to 2 mol. per cent and the quantity of regulator from 5 to 20 mol. per cent based on the total mixture. The catalyst may be removed from the polymer by aqueous alkali. Examples are given including, for comparison, the use of bleaching earth as catalyst. Uses: Lubricating oils and heat transfer liquids.
