Abstract

The invention comprises a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0924251/IV(a)/1> in which R1 and R2 each represents an oxo group, or a hydrogen atom together with a free or esterified hydroxyl group and a process for the manufacture of a 3-oxygenated-16a -methyl-17a -hydroxy-20-ketone of the allopregnane series wherein a 17(20)-16a -methyl-3,20-diacyloxy-allopregnene is subjected in an inert solvent to the action of an organic peracid at a temperature between 0 DEG C. and 40 DEG C. for more than 10 hours, the resulting 17,20-oxido 20-acylate is subjected to alkaline hydrolysis, and, if desired, a free 3-hydroxyl group is oxidised to the oxo group. As organic peracid there may be used perbenzoic acid, monoperphthalic acid or peracetic acid. Oxidation of the 3-hydroxy group may be effected with an N-bromocarboxylic acid amide or imide.
