Abstract
930,159. Centrifugal separators. SEPARATOR A.B. April 21, 1961 [April 22, 1960], No. 14499/61. Class 23. In a centrifuge for a sludge-containing mixture of liquids, e.g. water extracts of coffee or citrus juice, the liner discs in the separation chamber 9 are divided into two disc sections 10 and 11 by one disc 12 having a greater diameter than the other discs, the section 10 acting as a clarifier and the section 11 acting as a purifier and having outlets 15 and 17 for light and heavy separated liquids respectively. Sludge discharge openings 4 in the wall of the rotor body 1 are controlled by an axially movable valve disc 5 held closed by being pressed against the rotor cover 2 by liquid supplied through a stationary pipe 20 to the chamber 23 between the valve and the rotor. Throughflow holes 13 are provided in all the liner discs. In operation, liquid mixture to be treated is fed through the hollow spindle 7 to the chamber 9 where the sludge is separated out and forms a cushion 26 at the periphery of the chamber 9 and prevents heavy liquid passing round the outer edge of disc 12. Separated light liquid is discharged to the chamber 14 and the heavy liquid together with unseparated light liquid passes through holes 13 to the space above the disc where final separation occurs, the light liquid passing to chamber 14 and being discharged through the outlet 15 and the heavy liquid being discharge through channel 16 and the outlet 17. The reference numerals 12a and 12b indicate possible alternative positions of the disc 12. To discharge the sludge the supply of liquid mixture and the supply of liquid to chamber 23 is cut off without stopping the centrifuge. The liquid in chamber 23 then escapes through hole 24 and the valve 5 is pressed downwards by the content in the centrifuge which is then discharged through the openings 4. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the centrifuge has open outlets and holes 13 are not provided in the disc 12 but in a disc immediately above and connected to the disc 12 and having a lesser internal diameter than the other discs.
