Abstract

Compounds having the general formula <FORM:0934017/IV(a)/1> wherein R is an alkyl group of 8 to 20 carbon atoms and M and M1 are hydrogens, are prepared by reacting a p-cyano-benzoyl acetic ester with a 4-alkoxy-3-aminobenzoic acid and hydrolysing the cyano group to a carboxylic acid group. Reference is made to the ammonium and alkali metal salts of such compounds. Examples are given of the reaction of ethyl p-cyano benzyl acetate with 3-amino-4-tetradecoxy-benzoic acid, 3-amino-4-octadecoxy-benzoic acid or 3-amino-4-octoxybenzoic acid, followed by alkaline hydrolysis of the cyano group with ethanolic potassium hydroxide. Ethyl-4-cyanobenzoyl acetate is prepared by treating 4-cyanobenzoic acid (obtained by a Sandmeyer reaction with cuprous cyanide on the diazonium salt from p-aminobenzoic acid) with phosphorus pentachloride, and reacting the acid chloride formed with acetoacetic ester in the presence of sodium methylate, followed by hydrolysis with ammonium chloride and ammonium hydroxide.
