Abstract
935,438. Extruding. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., and MANNESMANN-MEER A.G. July 5, 1962 [July 11, 1961], No. 25109/61. Class 83 (4). A metal extrusion press has a rotary carrier 30 for at least one billet container 32, 33 and at least one discard shearing punch 34, 35 whereby rotation of the carrier will bring the container and shearing punch alternately into the press axis. Two containers and two punches are provided for alternate use on the carrier 30 which is rotated by a motor 36 through gearing 38 and can be moved axially by an hydraulic motor 52. Two alternately acting dies such as 49 are arranged on a second carrier 40 rotatable through gearing 46 by another motor 44, Fig. 3 (not shown), and movable axially by an hydraulic motor 54, Fig. 2 (not shown). The press is used for extruding tubes and its stem 14 carrying a dummy block 15, Fig. 2 (not shown), is actuated by a main ram 12; a mandrel passes axially through the stem. After extrusion the carrier 30 is retracted and then rotated to bring a shearing punch 34 into the press axis. The punch is pressed forwardly by the press stem 14 to shear off the discard against the die. The carrier 30 is then rotated through 90 degrees to bring the next billet container 32, which has been charged with a billet by means 58, into the press axis. Simultaneously the carrier 40 is rotated through 180 degrees to bring the new die 49 into the extrusion position. A container brushing means 56 is provided. The discard may alternatively be severed by a pendulum saw 60 which can also move parallel to the press axis. The press may be vertical or preferably horizontal and may have a transversely slidable die carrier.
