Abstract

937,386. Winding machines; thread guides. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. Feb. 28, 1961 [March 8, 1960], No. 7341/61. Class 120 (2). A thread-winding machine comprising a pair of bobbin supporting spindles 12, 20, Fig. 1, on arms 14, 22 that pivot about a common axis 16, includes thread-engaging members 26, 28 mounted on the adjacent ends of the spindles for engaging the thread as it is transferred from one bobbin to the other, there being a helically-shaped panel 46, Fig. 4, between the members 26, 28 to guide the thread down into notches 36, Fig. 5, formed in the members 26, 28 to cause the thread to be placed close to the periphery of the empty bobbin. The package 11, formed on one bobbin 18, and the empty bobbin each press against driving drums such that the take-up speed of the package 11 and the empty bobbin 18 are equal, with the result that the member 28 for the empty bobbin rotates at a greater speed than the member 26 for the wound bobbin. The resulting relative movement of the members 26, 28 draws the thread against a cutting edge 42 on the member 26 for the wound bobbin, for example as at B in Fig. 5. The members 26, 28 may have spline fittings so that they can be detached from the spindles 12 and 20 when it is desired to remove a bobbin. When a package 11 has been completed a thread guide 50 is manually displaced along a slot 52 and at the same time, a lifter bar 56 is temporarily raised to remove the thread from a traverse guide 68. The thread is then caught by the guide 70 of a second traversing mechanism and caused to run across the members 26, 28 that guide the thread down to the winding level of the bobbin 18 and sever the thread between the two bobbins.
