Abstract

939,587. Compressors. TRANE CO. Oct. 4, 1961 [Dec. 29, 1960], No. 35815/61. Class 8(1). A compressor is provided with unloading means comprising an annular piston member 36 which is spring-loaded towards a suction valve 22 and is associated with valve engaging means such as spring-biased pins 48 which are adapted to be moved by the piston member 36 to hold the suction valve open, and means being provided to supply fluid, e.g. oil, to a cavity 80 in response to the compressor loading conditions in order to force the annular piston member 36 against its spring-loading to allow the suction valve 22 to return to the normal operating position. The compressor has a piston 16 driven by a connecting rod 18 and operating in a cylinder defined by a cylinder liner 24. Gas passes from a suction chamber 12 to the cylinder under the control of the suction valve 22 and compressed gas passes from the cylinder to a discharge chamber 28 under the control of a discharge valve 26, the valves being spring-biased to the closed positions thereof. A crankcase 42 is separated from the suction chamber 12 by a partition 40 having an annular portion 38, and the annular piston member 36 is disposed in an annular chamber formed between the portion 38 and the cylinder liner 24, sealing means 64 being provided in the annular chamber. The compressor is preferably provided with a plurality of cylinders and is associated with refrigeration means comprising a condenser 30, a receiver 33, expansion means 34 and an evaporator 14 U.S.A.
