Abstract

944,339. Feeding sheets. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGSG.m.b.H. July 27, 1961 [July 30, 1960], No. 27289/61. Heading B6B. In apparatus for separating flat articles 5, such as sheets or letters, from a pile by means of a suction belt 1, means is provided to prevent the separation of more than one article at the same time comprising a yieldably mounted hollow member 10 supplied with compressed air and having an aperture 14 therein facing the belt 1, and a rib or boss on the operative face 12 which spaces the member 10 from the belt. When two superposed articles 8, 9 are separated by the belt, the air blast from the aperture 14 against the lower article 9 is directed transversely of the face 12 and creates a partial vacuum over that face, and therefor detaches the article 9 from the article 8. The belt. 1 has spaced groups of apertures 2 therein, and is movable over slots 24 of a suction chamber 4. The member 10, yieldably urged towards the belt 1, is carried by a pivoted hollow arm 11 connected to a source of compressed air, and has an inclined guide 13 on the leading edge. The face 12 may be ribbed and inclined to the belt 1; or it may be disposed parallel to the belt, Fig. 4a, and have a boss 17 thereon. An additional aperture 19 in the guide 13 to direct air towards the pile may be provided to assist separation, and a further aperture could be provided in the boss 17 to provide an air cushion for that boss. In a further modification (Fig. 5, not shown), there are two transversely-aligned blowing members 10, and an intermediate central suction member which arrests loosely attached double articles. Two or more compressed air members 10 may be mounted in spaced alignment along the path of the belt 1. In yet another modification, the sheets &c. 5 are separated by a suction drum, and the blowing member is curved to co-operate with the drum surface.
