Abstract
945,441. Stabilizing polypropylene. ARGUS CHEMICAL CORPORATION. June 9, 1961 [June 15, 1960], No. 20991/61. Heading C3P. Polypropylene is stabilized with a combination of an organic phenol, an organic phosphite triester, an ester of thiodipropionic acid and optionally a salt of an organic acid and a Group II metal. The phenol may be monohydric or polyhydric and may be in the form of a phenate; those specified include bis-phenols and thio-bisphenols. The phosphite may be of formula (RA) 3 P in which A is O or S or wherein both O and S may be present in the same molecule. The ester of thiodipropionic acid may be a di-ester, may contain only one ester group, may contain a polymeric chain of ester units, or may also be a salt of a Group II metal (e.g. Zn, Ca, Cd, Ba, Mg or Sr). The optional salt of an organic acid is preferably that of Zn, Ca, Cd, Ba, Mg or Sr. Stabilization of propylene/ethylene copolymers or of polypropylene/polyethylene compositions is also within the scope of the invention. Many possible stabilizer components are listed.
