Abstract

A composition is made by mixing a particulate refractory material, e.g. sillimanite, fire clay grogs, calcined kaolin, silica, crystobalite, quartz and alumina, with a solution of an acid-hydrolysed isopropyl silicate prepared e.g. by the processes described and claimed in Specifications 948,136 and 948,137, The hydrolysed solution may be made by adding the silicate to a mixture of water and acid, e.g. HCl or H2SO4, and preferably also containing a mutual solvent for the water and silicate. Examples 1 to 12 describe the preparation of isopropyl silicates; Examples 13 to 21 describe the preparation of the acid-hydrolysed silicate solutions; Examples 22 to 24 describe the preparation of the refractory mixes; and Examples 25 to 27 describe the use of the solutions for binding refractory materials.
