Abstract

949,442. Valves ; stuffing-box substitutes. GROVE VALVE & REGULATOR CO. April 30, 1962 [May 15, 1961], No. 16351/62. Headings F2B and F2V. A valve is provided with a seal arranged in a groove of one of the seating members. The seal comprises a solid resilient ring having a cross-section 40, Fig. 2A, formed with a flap portion having parallel sides 42a, 42b connected by a curved surface 42c. A seating portion 44 is formed by sides 44c, 44d parallel to the sides of the flap and forming shoulders 44a, 44b with the flap. The sides 44c, 44d extend into bulged portions 44e, 44f which are connected by a flat or curved bottom 44j. When the ring is inserted into the groove, which has parallel sides 38a, 38b, Fig. 2B, the bulged portions are compressed to grip the sides. In use, the flap flexes with closure of the valve and the groove is vented at 48 to provide a differential pressure across the seal urging it into the groove. The seal is described for use with gate-valves, cylindrical plug valves, spherical plug valves or butterfly valves.
