Abstract
A latex of natural or synthetic rubber in an aqueous suspension of a silica filler is prepared using a precipitated silica which after precipitation is treated with an acid in a pH range from 2 to 4, the suspension being adjusted to a pH of 4 to 7.5 and mixed with the latex and the mixture coagulated in known manner. The suspension may be prepared by precipitation of an alkali-silicate with an acid or acid salt while a filter cake paste obtained by precipitation and phase separation may be used for the production of the suspension. A natural or synthetic protective colloid e.g. casein or the condensation products of polyoxyethylene and stearic acid may be added in amounts of one to three% to the latex. Mineral acids or acid salts e.g. hydrochloric or sulphuric acid may be used to adjust the pH to 2 to 4 while aqueous alkalies e.g. ammonia may be used for pH 4 to 7.5. The ratio of natural or synthetic rubber to filler may be 100:4 to 100:100. The usual compounding agents may be added and the latex vulcanised.
