953,793. Toothed gearing; bearings. CAM GEARS Ltd. June 9, 1960 [June 9, 1959], No. 19794/59. Headings F2A and F2Q. In a rack-and-pinion steering gear, the pinion 2 is mounted in a ball-bearing having an inner race formed on the pinion shaft 5 and an outer race comprising two parts 11, 12 located in a cylindrical recess in the housing 4. The race parts 11, 12 are retained in the housing recess by a cover 14, and adjustment for wear is provided by shims 17. The rack 1 is mounted to slide in a slipper 3 and is urged laterally by a spring 16. The slipper 3 is adjustably mounted by shims 18. The rack 1 is slidably mounted in a flexible bearing at its end remote from the meshing zone. Specification 911,364 is referred to.
