Abstract
958,536. Rotary wing aircraft. K. H. WALLIS. Oct. 10, 1962 [Oct. 12, 1961], No. 36736/61. Heading B7W. The blades of an aircraft lifting rotor are mounted on flapping or teetering hinges and a plate is pivoted on a blade root or the rotor shaft, so that an edge of the plate can contact the rotor shaft or blade root, and the plate is movable about its pivot by centrifugal force to disengage its edge from the rotor shaft or blade root. The Figure shows a see-saw rotor mounted on a teetering axis (not shown) perpendicular to the axis of the blades 11 and to that of the rotor shaft 14. Plates 15 are pivoted to the blade roots at 16, and when the rotor is at rest are abutted against stops 21 by springs 18, so that a portion 23 of each plate contacts the rotor shaft and prevents teetering to avoid the rotor being fouled by an empennage or other structure. At a certain rotational speed, the centrifugal force on weights 17 rotates the plates to abut stops 22, so that a concave portion 24 of each plate is presented towards the shaft, to permit teetering. The operative edges of the plates may be so shaped that the permissible teetering increases continuously as the plates are pivoted increasingly by the centrifugal force.
