Abstract
Polymers of olefinically unsaturated monomers are made by polymerizing the monomers in a hydrocarbon solvent, in the presence of a polymerization catalyst which is a solid complex of a lithium alkyl and a lithium halide and which is suspended in, and insoluble in the solvent. The unsaturated monomers may be styrene, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, ethylene, propylene, vinyl chloride, butadiene, isoprene, dicyclopentadiene, and mixtures. The complex is preferably made by reacting lithium with an alkyl halide. The exemplified catalyst is a complex of lithium butyl and lithium chloride. The polymerizate is generally decomposed by methanol, the catalyst residues removed by washing with a hot-water-methanol mixture, and the polymer recovered preferably fractionated by solvent extraction.
