Abstract

Abrasive materials are produced by mixing particles of hard substances having a number of 8-10 on Moh's scale, such as powdered diamond, ruby, sapphire, tungsten, chromium, silicon or boron carbides, or mixtures of metal carbides with diamond powder with a relatively high melting hard solder, e.g. eutectic Cu/Ag alloys, and heating the mixture in an inert atmosphere, e.g. of argon or helium, in contact with titanium or zirconium at a temperature high enough to melt the solder and to dissolve therein titanium or zirconium. The hard substances may be diluted by the presence of metals having a melting point above that of the brazing temperature in the form of powder or small lumps, e.g. nickel, iron or tungsten. The titanium or zirconium may either be added to the materials to be heated in the form of a powder and the mixture heated in a refractory or metal crucible, or the mixture of hard substance and alloy heated in a support of titanium or zirconium. A homogeneous abrasive mass of any desired shape may be obtained.
