Abstract
Amorphous copolymers of olefins containing up to 12 carbon atoms are made by effecting the polymerization of a mixture of olefins of which at least one is a 1-olefin, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a titanium trichloride-containing composition made from TiCl4 and an organo-aluminium compound, and which has subsequently been washed with an inert solvent, and an aluminium trialkyl. The reaction is generally effected in a hydrocarbon solvent or diluent. The olefins mentioned are ethylene, propylene, butene-(1), pentene-(1), hexene-(1), 4-methylpentene-(1), 5,5-dimethylhexene-(1), 3-methylpentene-(1), 3-ethylhexene-(1), styrene, allylbenzene, 4-phenylbutene-(1), butadiene-(1,3), isoprene, pentadiene-(1,3), and hexadiene-(1,3). The aluminium trialkyl may be aluminium tripropyl, tributyl, tripentyl, trihexyl, triheptyl, or trioctyl. The copolymers may be vulcanized by conventional techniques.
