A safety device for headlamp bulbs comprises, on the headlamp, a rigid grounding terminal 3 and a grounded flange 2 centred upon the headlamp axis, having an aperture 6 which reproduces closely the outline of the bulb projection ; and on the bulb, a bi-metal strip 11 parallel with the headlamp axis and secured to the bulb cap 8 at 13, the aperture 6 having a notch 7 to permit passage of the bi-metal strip when fitting the bulb. A collar 15 is fixed to cap 8 and is positioned so that electric contact is made with the grounded flange only when the bulb is fully inserted, and when the bulb is hot the bi-metal strip distorts preventing withdrawal of the bulb.
