Abstract

964,307. Casting composite articles; cores. NATIONAL LEAD CO. Dec. 11, 1962 [Dec. 13, 1961], No. 46681/62. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F1] In a pressure die die-casting process an assembly of separable core parts is coated at least in part with a protective coating sufficiently thick to maintain itself during the casting operation and which will remain adhered to the casting after removal of the core. A collapsible core for an I.C.E. cylinder comprises a centre section 10 and side sections 14, 15, 16 which engage therewith by dowels 17. The sections are assembled and coated with a coating, e.g. of iron alloy deposited by a metallizing spray gun, and having a rough porous surface so that it will adhere to the casting. The coating may be made thicker at one end of the cylinder than at the other for reinforcing purposes, or it may be varied in composition from end to end to be more refractory in the combustion chamber and more retentive of oil in the lower end of the cylinder. The coating extends over the core projections which form the engine exhaust ports so that the walls of the ports are lined. The coating may be applied by dipping or coating and may be fired or cured to form a coating which will not be washed off during casting.
