A catalyst for the conversion of hydrocarbons with steam to produce hydrogen and oxides of carbon consists essentially of (1) elementary nickel, nickel oxide and/or a nickel salt convertible to nickel oxide at an elevated temperature, (2) a refractory support which includes ZrO 2 , or Al 2 O 3 in combination with at least one other refractory oxide, or a mixture thereof, and (3) at least one alkali metal compound present in an amount sufficient to provide at least 0À5 and not more than 30 weight per cent alkali metal in the finished catalyst. The nickel content of the catalyst is preferably from 4-40%. The refractory support may contain aluminosilicates, MgO, CaO, SiO 2 , Cr 2 O 3 or porous, chrome or hydraulic cements. The alkali metal compound is preferably a hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate, nitrate, sulphate, silicate, oxalate or acetate of Li, Na or K. Examples are given.
