Abstract
968,061. Electric cables. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. Aug. 20. 1963 [Jan. 2, 1963], No. 202/63. Heading H1A. An electric cable comprises a longitudinally seamed, metal-plastics laminate wrapped round its insulated conductor and an extruded outer plastics sheath which is bonded to the plastics surface of the laminate. A cable is manufactured by passing an insulated conductor 1, Fig. 2, and metal-plastics laminate 5, whose metallic surface is adjacent the conductor, between shaping rollers 16, 17, 18 so that the conductor is wrapped in the laminate. After the longitudinal edges of the laminate have been roughened by scratohers 14, rollers 18 form them into a longitudinal seam 6 by cold welding them together. The seam is then bent over by die 22 and a plastics sheath is extruded from a machine 24 to cover the laminate. A shaped trough instead of rollers may be used to wrap the conductor in the laminate (Fig. 5, not shown). Aluminium and polyethylene or P.V.C. may be used for the metal layer and the plastics layer of the laminate and the material of the extruded sheath is preferably the same as that used in the laminate.
