Abstract

Fluorine-containing copolymers containing monomeric units of tetrafluoroethylene and of an unsaturated monohydroperfluoro compound of formula R-CH=CF2 in which R is a perfluorinated alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl radical or of formula <FORM:0975382/C3/1> where n is 2 to 4, may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomer in suspension, emulsion, solution or bulk in the presence of a free radical polymerization initiator. Specified monohydro perfluoro compounds are 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoropropylene, 2-hydroheptafluorobutene-1, 2-hydrononafluoropentene-1, a -hydroperfluorostyrene, 1,1-difluoro -2- perfluorocyclohexylethylene, 1-hydro-perfluorocyclobutene-1 and 1-hydroperfluorocyclohexene-1. Specified initiators are ammonium, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal persulphates, perphosphates and perborates; barium, sodium and hydrogen peroxides; azo compounds; and organic peroxides and hydro-peroxides such as the peroxides of trichloroacetic and heptafluorobutyric acids. Specified solvent media are perfluorocyclobutane, perfluorodimethylcyclobutane, perfluoropropylpyrane and tetrafluorodichloroethane. In examples tetrafluoroethylene and 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoropropylene are copolymerized in the presence of (1) ammonium persulphate, sodium metabisulphite and water, (2) perfluorobutyric acid peroxide and perfluorocyclobutane, (3) perfluorobutyric acid peroxide, (4) azodiisobutyronitrile and perfluorocyclobutane, (5) ammonium persulphate and water, (6) ammonium persulphate, ferrous sulphate and water, and (7) ammonium persulphate, sodium metibisulphite, ammonium perfluorocaprylate and water. The copolymers may be moulded to form shaped articles such as sheets.
