Abstract

976,195. Paper-making; web-coating apparatus. COMBINED LOCKS PAPER CO. Feb. 15, 1961 [Aug. 1, 1960], No. 5624/61. Headings D1L and D2A. A coating composition which contains over 50% of solids is applied to paper by forming a pond of the coating composition on the surface of a press roll at the wet end of a paper-making machine in such a manner that a continuous supply of the coating is furnished to the nip between the press roll and an applicator roll, that is of small diameter, is in contact with the press roll, can be driven at a controlled but adjustable speed, and is driven in the opposite rotary direction to the press roll, but with a speed sufficiently less than that of the press roll that the pond remains in placid non-splashing condition, and coating from the pond is applied to the press roll and transferred from it to a paper web. The web may have a moisture content of more than 50% and the coating composition a solids content of 50% to 60%. As shown, a web 10 from a papermaking machine (not shown) is carried by a felt 16 through the press 18, at a water content of 80 to 86%. An applicator roll 28 is mounted as shown and driven by an electric motor 29 in the direction shown. Coating composition is supplied from a manifold 32 to form a pool 30. Catch boxes 34 at the ends of the roll control the depth of the pool and catch overflow for reuse. On starting, the speeds of the two rollers (18 and 28) are substantially equal; when the pool has been established, the speed of the roller 28 is reduced until turbulence and splashing cease. The other side of the web may also be coated at a reverse press. The coating composition may contain: starch, casein or other adhesives; clay,pigment or minerals;and additives. It may have a high viscosity. Specification 756,881 is referred to.
