Abstract

977,550. Laminates and laminating. DOW CHEMICAL CO. May 20, 1963 [May 31, 1962], No. 20015/63. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B2] Carpet backing comprises a coating or integrally bonded layer comprising a copolymer of ethylene with another monoethylenically unsaturated monomer. The percentage by weight of the copolymerized monomer may be from 5 to 50%, the preferred range being from 10 to 40%. Other homopolymers or copolymers, either of ethylene or other monomers, may be blended with the copolymer of the invention. Suitable monomers are the acrylate and methacrylate esters including methyl-, ethyl-, propyl- and butyl-acrylate or methacrylate; vinyl acetate; olefins such as propylene, butyllene, isobutylene and pentene; vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile; the preferred monomers being ethyl acrylate, vinyl acetate and propylene. Inert fillers such as whitings, clay, talc, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, silicas, carbon black, calcium and magnesium silicates, barium sulphate and wood flour may be included. The copolymer should preferably have a tensile modulus between 700 and 14,000 p.s.i. and may be either extruded on to the carpet back or distributed thereover in pulverulent form and then heated, e.g. by infra-red lamps to cause fusion and spreading; in either case the coated carpet is then passed through rolls to smooth the coating and assist penetration into the carpet tufts which may eg. be of nylon.
