Abstract

Roving 16, e.g. of glass fibres, to be wound on to a bobbin 1 is guided thereto by means of a presser assembly comprising a pivotally mounted unit 20 on or from which are supported a guide wheel 25 mounted above the bobbin 1, a thread guide 2, a roller 3 which presses against the wound material on the bobbin 1, a counterweight 22 and lever 21, the whole assembly being arranged so that its centre of gravity coincides with a shaft 5 on which it is pivotally mounted. The assembly is therefore in stable equilibrium whatever its position, and the pressure between the roller 3 and the bobbin, and the tension of the roving as it is wound onto the bobbin are substantially constant throughout the growth of the wound package and are determined by the tension K in the roving leaving the tensioning device 18. The guide roller 25 is suspended from a frame 23 and is adapted to oscillate with the traversing motion of the thread guide. The thread guide is mounted on a carriage for reciprocal traversing movement under the action of a grooved cam mounted on the shaft 5 (Fig. 4 not shown), and may itself comprise a grooved roller (Fig. 7 not shown). A bent wire forms a fork or eye 27 through which the roving passes to the thread guide and is mounted on the thread guide carriage. A common motor drives the bobbin and traverse cam.
