Abstract
979,102. Atomising burners. JOHN I. THORNYCROFT & CO. Ltd. March 20, 1963 [May 25, 1962], No. 20167/62. Heading F4T. A liquid fuel atomiser comprising three coaxial outlets 21, 20, 22, for air and/or steam, liquid fuel, and air, has a mushroom-shaped baffle 23 which causes the air stream from the outlet 21 to be discharged at right angles into the fuel stream from the outlet 20 so as to change the direction of the fuel stream and the resultant mixed stream to be discharged at right angles into the air stream from the outlet 22 so as to change the direction of the mixed stream. The outlets 21, 20, 22 are formed at the ends of three coaxial tubes 11, 15, 14. The air is supplied by a shroud 13 and delivered to the innermost outlet through passages 12 and to the outermost outlet through orifices 16, 16<SP>1</SP>. Liquid fuel is supplied to the intermediate outlet 20 by ducts 17, 18 and is swirled by helical ribs 33 on the inner tube 11. The outer face of the baffle 23 is cooled by air supplied to a central recess 27 therein by four non-radial bores 28. The baffle has a stem 25 adjustably screwed into the rear wall 26 of the tube 11.
