Abstract

a -Olefins, e.g. propylene, are polymerized to yield isotactic products in the presence of a catalyst made by grinding a mixture of TiCl3 and AlCl3 in a non-cocrystallised state to which is added an aluminium alkyl, e.g. Al(Et)3 or (Et)2AlCl. Comparative examples describe the polymerization of liquid propylene under hydrogen in an autoclave. Alternatively polymerization may be effected in hydrocarbon solvents, e.g. pentane, hexane, heptane, octane or cyclohexane. U.S.A. Specification 3,032,510 is referred to.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst is prepared by grinding a mixture of TiCl3 and AlCl3 in a non-co-crystallized state. Grinding is preferably effected by ball-milling in an inert atmosphere. Additionally the catalyst may contain an aluminium alkyl, either substituted or unsubstituted, e.g. Al(Et)3 or (Et)2AlCl. Examples are given. U.S.A. Specification 3,032,510 is referred to.
