983,641. Steam generators. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. May 22, 1962 [May 25, 1961], No. 19729/62. Headings F4A and F4B. A steam generator is adapted for firing by gaseous fuel in one combustion chamber and by solid and/or gaseous fuel in a separate combustion chamber. Six burner ports 44 for gas, e.g. blast furnace gas, are disposed in both side walls of a combustion chamber 2 having a closable outlet 45 and separated from a slag tap combustion chamber 1 by a partition wall 5. Upper and lower burner groups 31, 32 in the outer stepped wall of the chamber 1 comprise pulverized fuel nozzles disposed on either side of gas and air nozzles (Fig. 3, not shown). The flame from the upper group 31 of burners is largely burnt out before reaching the level of the lower group 32. A partition 42 serves to conduct the gases downwardly so as to pass through a slag screen 3. Combustion gases from both chambers pass successively into a common radiation chamber 6, a lateral pass 7, a downpass 10, a turning space 17 and a vertical pass 18 before passing to the exhaust duct 30. Fuel gas heaters 25 ... 28 are disposed in the vertical pass 18 between combustion air heaters 19 ... 24 and a rotary regenerative flue gas air heater 29. To provide a measure of control of the temperatures in the vertical gas pass 18 under different settings of fuel supply a damper controlled by-pass of economiser surfaces disposed in the downpass 10 is provided. Combustion chambers 1, 2 and radiation chamber 6 are lined with wall tubes arranged in rising " meander " fashion. A superheater 8 and high temperature reheater stage 9 are disposed in the lateral pass 7 followed by a further reheater stage 11 and successive economizer stages 12, 13, 14 arranged in the downpass 10. The economizer is preferably a steaming economizer. A superheated steam attemperator 47 followed by a heatexchanger 46 in which reheated steam is heated by the superheated steam are provided, particularly for those occasions when the furnace is fired predominantly with solid fuel.
