In a vehicle steering mechanism of the kind in which an axially movable nut 13 in screwthreaded connection with a rotary shaft 12 carries rack teeth 20 which are engaged by a plurality of sectors 19 on a rocker shaft 18, the sectors 19 are spaced apart along the length of the rocker shaft 18 and are on opposite sides of the axis of the rotary shaft 12, there being also provided means for urging the rotary shaft 12 laterally towards the rocker shaft 18. The end of the rotary shaft 12 is carried in a roller bearing 21 on which acts a screw-threaded abutment 22 disposed on that side of the bearing remote from the rocker shaft 18. Alternatively, or in addition, a spring may be employed. The screw connection comprises recirculating balls 14. For hydraulic operation, the nut 13 is non-rotatably mounted in a piston 11 by means of a peg 15, the piston 11 being disposed in a cylinder 10.
