Abstract
A process for the production of a refractory composite comprises mixing 100 parts of a carbonaceous material (graphite or coke flour, with or without a carbonaceous binder such as pitch) and 10-100 parts of boron, boron + silicon, boron + silicon + one or more of Zn, HfNbTi or boron + one of the above refractory metals, and heating the mixture at a temperature of at least 1800 DEG C. under a pressure of at least 2500 p.s.i. The materials in the second portion of the mixture may be added as such or as compounds of one another or of carbon.
