Apparatus for feeding sheets 1 and aligning them laterally before they enter a processing machine, comprises two endless conveyer belts 10, 11 arranged one above the other to grip and feed the sheets past a photo-electric sensing means 22, 23, the pulleys 12 . . . 16 supporting the belts being mounted in a frame which has slides 18, 19 engaging in recesses in the main frame 20, 21, and means is provided for shifting the belts transversely under the control of the sensing means 22, 23. As described, the sheets 1 are fed sequentially to a suction drum 5, and are placed between the belts 10, 11 by a suction drum 3. If two superposed sheets are received by the drum 5, a roller (4, not shown) cooperating therewith is urged away from the drum to operate a switch and cause suction to be maintained on the drum 5 so that the sheet is not released to the drum 3, but is released later and discharged through a shoot. The sensing means comprises two photo-electric means 22, 23 adjustably spaced apart so that their beams are not cut off by a correctly aligned sheet: a displaced sheet cuts the beam of one or the other means 22, 23, and causes an appropriate transverse movement of the belt system. A second photo-electric means 24, 25 and, where necessary, as succession of such means may be provided along the sheet path L, the space a between such means being equal to or less than the width of the sheets. The aligned sheets are further conveyed by opposed belts 26, 27 between a pair of belts of the processing machine, assisted by an endless chain having abutments thereon and arranged between the belts. The abutments travel at a speed which is slower than that of the belts 26, 27, so that the sheets are urged by the belts against the abutments.
