Abstract

A process for preparing an acid-stable crystalline synthetic mordenite capable of adsorbing molecules larger than 5 <\>rA, comprises reacting in a closed container a batch composition having the oxide ratios (molar):- .Na2O/SiO2.......0.07-0.30 .SiO2/Al2O3.......6-180 .H2O/Na2O.......6-300 .Na2O/Al2O3.......at least 1 at a temperature of from 75 DEG to 260 DEG C. The source of silica is preferably a volcanic glass such as pumice or a diatomaceous earth. Other conventional ingredients may be used. The mordenite may be treated with acid to give the hydrogen-exchange mordenite.
