Abstract

996,312. Bottling. LESBRO ENGINEERING PRODUCTS (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. Aug. 20, 1963 [Sept. 3, 1962], No. 32971/63. Heading B8T. A filling valve, primarily intended for use in a rotating drum counter - pressure filling machine, comprises a gas tube 8, a liquid supply passageway leading from the main outlet via an annulus 10 and ports 11, 12 to a pressure responsive supply valve 13, a snifter outlet 24 connectable to the liquid supply passageway and a valve 23 which controls supply of gas to the gas tube and discharge from the snifter outlet. In operation, a bottle has its neck pressed against a seal 6 to lift a bell-mouthed inlet 5 and at the same time to rock a cam 34 from the position shown to an operative position whereupon a further rotation of the cam causes valve rod 26 of valve 23 to be lifted by anti-clockwise rotation of a spindle 33. Gas from an inlet 25 is thereby allowed to flow via annulus 53, passageway 64, tube 8 and a liquid responsive valve 9 into the bottle. As soon as the gas pressure has built up to equal the liquid supply pressure it causes, in conjunction with a spring 18, piston 15 of supply valve 13 to lift and allow passage of liquid to the bottle. Valve 9, described in Specification 989,998, causes cut-off of the liquid supply when the liquid level reaches the lower portion of the valve. Further rotation of the cam 34 causes lowering of valve rod 26 to the position shown in Fig. 1, so that the connection between gas inlet 25 and gas tube 8 is cut off and the annulus 10 is opened to atmosphere via snifter outlet 24. The liquid contained in the ports 11, 12 and annulus 10 being under pressure is discharged through the snifter outlet together with the excess gas above the level of the liquid in the bottle and the liquid supply valve 13 closes due to the relatively higher pressure on the inlet side thereof. Due to combined discharge of liquid and gas, the gas discharge itself is controlled and no foaming results.
