Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an acrylic resin having improved solvent resistance, by adding a chain transfer agent to the polymerization system of a monomer solution consisting mainly of methyl methacrylate to control the molecular weight distribution of the resulting acrylic resin in a specific range.
CONSTITUTION: Suspension polymerization of a monomer solution containing methyl methacrylate (M) or MA and 50 wt.% or less of an acrylate is started in the presence of a polymerization initiator. At a conversion of 15W60 wt.%, 0.01W 5 wt.% based on the monomer weight of a chain transfer agent is added by portions or continuously to control the polymerization, thus giving a viscosity-average molecular weight of 50,000W300,000 and a ratio (Mw/Mn) of the weight-average to the number-average molecular weight of 2.3W6.0 measured by the gel permeation chromatography. At a conversion ≥99 wt.%, the polymerization is completed.
