Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance glass cutting property as well as reduce a cost by preparing a composition comprising a binding phase component of ferrous metal and a hard phase component with a specific particle size containing TiN, TiC and one or more of a predetermined metal.
CONSTITUTION: This hard metal contains, by wt.%, one or more of ferrous metal as a binding phase forming component in a content of 5W30%, TiN, TiC and inevitable impurities as a hard phase forming component in a content of 5W30% and one or more of WC, Mo2C, TaC, NbC and VC in a content of 10W30%. At the same time, a ratio of a TiC content against a total content amount of TiN and TiC is within a range of 55/100W90/100 and, moreover, an average particle diameter of a hard phase forming component is 0.3W3.0μ. From this hard metal, a knife shape can be made in a low cost by a conventional powder metallurgy method using a low cost main stock material and shows excellent toughness, abrasion resistance as well as glass cutting property superior to diamond.
