Abstract

PURPOSE:To minimize the damage of the end face in the terminal part of an optical fiber which constitutes a light guide by light output by integrally forming a beam diffusing part consisting of glass, etc., to the above-mentioned end face. CONSTITUTION:This optical fiber F consists of a core 1 and a clad 2 and the beam diffusing part 3 consisting of the glass, etc., is integrally formed to the terminal part. Since the beam diffusing part 3 is formed, the light beam emitted from the core 1 is widened and transmitted, while the end face of the core 1 is coated and protected by the beam diffusing part 3. The light power density and electric field intensity at the end face of the beam diffusing part 3 which constitutes the boundary with an air layer are thereby decreased and the breakdown threshold is decreased at the internal end face of the core and the end face of the beam diffusing part. The damage of the end face is thus minimized.
