Description

Apparat for kontinuerlig kokning av celluloseholdige materialer. Apparatus for continuous boiling of cellulose-containing materials.

The present invention relates to an apparatus for continuous boiling of cellulose-containing materials such as wood shavings.

The device can be used for cooking cellulose-containing materials according to the "Kraft" process, but it can also be used for cooking according to the sulphite process.

Commercial methods for digesting cellulose-containing materials have mostly been batch processes that require long boiling periods, and downtime while the boilers are filled and emptied. Several commercial continuous methods have recently been developed to cook cellulosic materials, but nevertheless these methods still require a relatively long cooking time and have made small modifications to the original cooking processes.

With known apparatus, there have been difficulties both when feeding tiles into vessels which are held at pressure above atmospheric pressure and when separating mass from the cooking liquor after digestion. E.g. when supplying chips to a degasser or to a boiler, supply devices such as a pump piston or a screw type have been used to achieve an impermeable plug of the material to prevent leakage from the vessel. But the fiber properties can be seriously damaged by the formation of such a plug. It is also known to use rotary or star valves as combined supply and closing devices, but such valves have the internal defects that steam can be released in the empty pockets which return to the position for filling chips, and that air can be introduced in the boiler together with the chip to produce severe erosion or corrosion causing high maintenance costs and loss of production while the plants are being replaced or repaired.

The difficulties in separating pulp from caustic liquor after digestion have led to it becoming a fairly common practice to make use of additional equipment such as a blower container or a spreader-type separator to separate the pulp and black liquor.

The apparatus for boiling cellulosic materials according to the invention comprises a degasser and a boiler, and the special feature of the apparatus is that it comprises a combination of the following devices: devices for producing a suspension of cooking liquid and cellulosic material, devices for introducing said suspension in said exhauster and this exhauster comprises a separator arranged vertically therein, said separator being provided with a basin in its lower part and provided with a perforated inner wall to enable liquid to be carried away or drained from said suspension and introduced into in said basin, devices for successively steaming and venting the degasser to degas said material, a mixing tank equipped with devices for introducing said degassed material into said mixing tank, devices for maintaining a pressure balance between said degasser and said tank, devices to introduce a lignin-removing liquid into said tank so that it forms e n suspension of the degassed material and liquid, an impregnator equipped with means for passing said suspension of degassed material and liquid through said impregnator in which the material is impregnated with liquid, a boiler for removing lignin from the impregnated material in a non-immersed state in an atmosphere of steam, and devices for conveying said impregnated material to said boiler.

Particularly suitably, said boiler comprises a separator arranged vertically in it and this separator is equipped with a basin in its lower part and equipped with a perforated inner wall to enable liquid to be carried away from said suspension of the impregnated material and liquid and introduced into in said pool. Other features of the invention will appear more clearly from the following description seen in connection with the accompanying drawing which shows a schematic arrangement of suitable apparatus according to the invention.

With more particular reference to the drawing, the main components of the illustrative apparatus consist of a chip feed hopper 10, a chip liquid mixing container 20 which receives chips from the hopper 10, a degasser 30 to which a chip liquid suspension formed in the container 20 is transported, a chip boiling liquor mixing vessel 40 which receives degassed chips from the degasser 30, an impregnator 50 and a digester 60 with an upper leaching zone 61 and a lower leaching zone 62 in which digested material from the upper zone is subjected to countercurrent washing.

During operation, chips are fed from the chip feed hopper 10 through a star valve 11 or other suitable conveying device to a conveyor belt 12 which carries chips to the chip-liquid mixing container 20.

In the mixing container 20, the chip is brought into contact with liquid entering through the additive liquid line 21 to form a chip-cooking liquor suspension. The introduction of liquid through the line 21 is regulated with suitable flow control devices 22. The chip-liquid suspension in the container 20 is transported through the pipes 23 and 23' under the influence of the pump 24 to the degasser 30.

In the degasser 30, the chip-liquid suspension is led out from the pipe 23' and into a chip-liquid separator 31 - The separator 31 is shown for illustration purposes as a substantially cylindrical double-walled vessel with a closed lower part and an open upper part. The separator 31 has an inner wall 32 provided with perforated parts to enable liquid to drain from the tile through the wall 32 into a basin 33 of the closed lower part of the separator 31. From the basin 33 the recovered liquid can be returned to the chip-liquid mixing vessel 20 through the pipe 34 which is provided with suitable conventional control devices 35 to regulate the liquid level in the basin 33.

Chips enter the separator 13 built up within the central depression bounded by the perforated inner wall 32 and overflow out through the open upper part of the separator 31 and fall by gravity towards the bottom of the degasser 30. While the chips flow out of the separator 31, it is effectively degassed by means of steam from a steam pipe 36 and a valve 37 which is alternately opened and closed by suitable regulating devices 38. The degassed chips pass from the degasser 30 into the mixing container 40 for degassed chips and liquid through suitable supply devices -nings 39. The supply device 39 is not a valve in the usual sense since it is not intended to be a seal between the vessels 30 and 40. Both vessels are operated at the same pressure since the pressure in the two containers is equalized by the pipe 47 which connects the two containers . Thus, the supply device 39 will not cause such maintenance difficulties as can easily occur with a valve. The chip movement in the degasser 30 is regulated to provide sufficient residence time there to ensure complete degassing.

In the container 40, the degassed chips are mixed with cooking liquid from the pipe 64 leading from the boiler 60, which will be described in more detail later, and from the pipe 41 that branches off from the additive liquid pipe 21. The flow of additive liquid through the pipe 41 can be regulated by a regulator 42 corresponding to the liquid level in the container 40. The degassed chip is suspended with liquid in the container 40. The resulting suspension leaves the container 40 through the pipe 43 which has suitable non-return valve device 44 which is normally open, but which will is closed in the event of a pump failure to prevent a strong blowback wave from the boiler etc., and is pumped to the impregnation device 50 by the pump 45.

The impregnator 50 is formed of tubes which can be arranged in steps forming a spiral path or in any other arrangement to provide the necessary residence time to impregnate the tile with cooking liquid.

From the impregnator 50, the impregnated chip is led to a chip-liquid separator 63 in the digestion sector 61 in the digester 60. The separator 63 essentially corresponds to the separator 31 in the degasser 30. Liquid is separated from the chips by being removed through perforated parts of the inner walls of the separator 63- This liquid is collected in the closed end of the separator 63 and is returned to the degassed sawdust-liquid mixing container 40 through the pipe 64. Suitable regulating devices for the liquid level 64' regulate the return flow from the bottom of the separator 63 so that the liquid level there is maintained above the level of the pipe 64 so that the liquid acts as a sealing medium. High-pressure steam is introduced into the digestion part 61 through the pipe 65 and a pressure-sensitive regulating device 65'. Chips introduced into the separator 63 flow over its open upper end and fall towards the bottom of the digester zone 61 to be deposited on a downwardly moving mass of chips which extends from a level adjacent the bottom of the digester zone 61 down into the exclusion zone 62. Steam which is admitted through the pipe 65 quickly raises the temperature of the chip to boiling temperature while the chip moves up and out of the separator 63 and down and out of the digestion zone 61 and into the leaching zone 62. The chip is rapidly boiled during such movement in an atmosphere of saturated steam. The speed with which the chip moves through the absorption zone 61 is regulated so that the residence time there is sufficient to completely absorb the chip without subjecting the chip to an unwanted excessive treatment at the cooking temperature which would destroy the cellulose fibres.

Entrained chips or pulp from the leaching zone 61 pass downwards into the leaching zone 62 where the mass is subjected to countercurrent washing with washing water that enters the leaching zone 62 near the bottom of it through the pipe 66. The speed with which the washing water is introduced is regulated with a conventional regulating device 66'. A substantial percentage of the soluble digestion products in the pulp are washed out by the wash water and are removed as black liquor through the pipe 67 and the flow control device 67'. Because of the black liquor's high concentration, it is suitable for subsequent burning as a fuel with minimal intermediate work. In the illustrative embodiment, it is the liquid level in the digester 60, which is primarily regulated by the position of the pipe 67 and the rate at which the black liquor is removed therethrough, which essentially determines the line of demarcation between the upper leaching zone 61 and the lower leaching zone 62 .

The pulp is removed from the bottom of the leaching zone 62 through a valve tube 68 or any other discharge device such as a screw press. The pulp can be processed further in a Jordan mill and by further washing, sorting and subsequent conventional processing.

The control devices shown in the illustrative embodiment, such as valves, level control devices, cyclic discharge devices, etc., may be of any well-known conventional design, and may be supplemented by additional conventional control devices without departing from the spirit herein invention.

The term wood chips used in the description and claims is used in a general sense to indicate wood chips or other cellulose-containing materials.
