BOOKBINDERS END-SHEET-TIP PING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 6, 1910. Serial No. 559,832.
One of its objects is to provide mechanism whereby strips of tape can be automatically fed and pasted to, either the fiat or folded sheets.
Another object is to provide mechanism to automatically feed strips of tape and to paste said strips by single paste lines or by plural paste lines to opposite edges of folded sheets, or as required.
Another object is to provide improved tape feeding and pasting mechanism.
Another object is to provide improved sheet guiding and placing mechanism.
Another object is to provide improved mechanism to force the sheets in contact with the pasted tapes, and to feed the same from the mechanism.
It further consists in certain details 0 form, combination and arrangement, all of which will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved mechanism. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are plan views of cams on the main driving shaft. In the accompanying drawings is repre sented one embodiment of my improved mechanism, my said invention being capable of embodiment in several different forms or modifications. In the form illustrated the sheets are fed successively by hand and the strips of cloth or tape are cut to the desired length and placed in a hopper, from which they are successively automatically and intermittently fed and the paste applied thereto, and the pasted strips brought to position to be applied to the sheets to which they are to be attached. The sheets and tapes are then pressed into contact with each other and fed from the machine.
A represents the frame of the machine to one end of which is attached a channeled .plate A which servesas the frame for the tape hopper and feeding mechanism. The
tape hopper comprises a series of vertical rods, a to act as side guides for the tapes or cloth strips B, and end plates a a to engage the ends of the tapes. A reciprocating head 6& travels in ways a in the plate A and has pivotally attached thereto an arm a the upper face of which is armed with a series of inclined points a; said arm a travels in a narrow channel a and is adapted to be pressed against the central longitudinal portion of the under face of the stack of tapes in the hopper so as to successively engage and feed the under tape from the stack of tapes in the hopper as the head a and arm a are reciprocated. The free end of arm of rides upon a roller a carried at one end of a lever a, which lever is centrally pivoted and adapted to be tilted to alternately lift the arm a into engagement with the lower tape during the forward movement of said arm, and to lower said arm out of engagement with the tape on its return movement.
In front of the tape hopper mounted in vertically adjustable bearings 72 is a shaft 6 to which are rigidly secured rubber-tired rollers 6 which press yieldingly upon the plate A on opposite sides of the channel a. The roller (Z is positively and intermittently driven, and its periphery has two milled or roughened surfaces, and a channel in the center. The roller d has a corresponding periphery and is free to rotate when in contact with the tape or face of roller d. The bearing d in which roller (Z is carried is mounted upon an arm (Z which is mounted in vertical guides (Z and adapted to alternately raise and lower the roller al The forward end of the tape is inserted between rollers (Z al while said rollers are separated, and remains in that position until roller d is lowered, when the tape is again fed forward until its rear end passes rollers d (Z after which said rollers are again separated.
Immediately in front of rollers (Z d is a paste hopper or pot E which is seated by gravity in a frame 6. Vithin the pot E is journaled a paste roller 6 having one or more roughened paste applying peripheral faces, and a recess or channel corresponding to the channels of rollers (Z d a positively and intermittently driven roller 6 traveling at the same peripheral speed as roller d, and said roller e serves to feed the tape under the paste roller and is arranged to stop as soon as the rear end of the tape is reached, in order not to coat the roller e with paste.
Immediately in front of the paste pot are a series of positively and continuously driven lower rollers F, having roughened peripheral faces to engage the tape and channels to receive a wire or rod f to prevent the tape being fed around any one of said rollers. The corresponding upper rollers F are adjustably journaled in a vertically movable box or housing f which is alternately raised and lowered to separate and bring the rollers F F into contact. As the pasted tape is fed from the paste pot it enters between the rollers F F with the rollers F in the elevated position, and the tape is fed forward over the rollers F until its forward end engages a vertically movable stop f which stops the forward feed of the tape.
The work-table G has a section 9 which is hinged at g and adapted to be raised and lowered in unison with the movements of the rollers F with hinges g as a center of movement. The table section 9 carries an adjustable gage g and the sheets either previously folded or flat are fed by hand by the operator into position between the rolls F F and above the pasted tape while the section 9 is in its elevated position to hold the sheet free from the pasted tape. As the sheet is fed in, the operator draws the edge of the sheet against the gage 9 while an automatically actuated side register g riding on table section 9 pushes the sheet sidewise into contact with the stop f thus bringing the sheet above the pasted tape. The section 9, stop f and rollers F then move downwardly which brings the sheet into contact with the pasted face of the tape and the rollers F to bear upon and press the sheet and tape against the rollers F, causing the sheet and tape to feed forward through the rollers H H and out of the machine where they fall into a hopper I of well known construction, and not a part of my invention, where the sheets are stacked one above another.
The several parts are actuated in the following manner:
J represents the main driving shaft, which as illustrated is driven at the desired speed through a train of gears 2, 3, 4t, 5, 6, 7, from an electric motor j.
K represents a rock shaft which carries a rocker arm 70, to which is pivotally attached a rod which passes through a hole in a stud 76 carried by the traveling head a A spring 70 engages between the stud 70 and a collar 72 on rod 70 and on the opposite side of stud Z3 is a collar 70 and lock nuts The rocker arm is is reciprocated by means of an eccentric 70 on shaft J to which it is attached by an eccentric strap and pitman 70 The rocker arm is also carries a pin L which engages a pin Z on a reciprocating head Z carried by table G and which by means of adjustable rod 7 actuates the side register 9 A stud f acts as a guide for the rod f, and f represents a stop.
Pivotally supported by the rock shaft K is a lever M, which is rocked by means of a cam m on shaft J, which cam engages a roller on the end of lever M. To the opposite end of lever M is pivoted a rod m which rocks a lever m which in turn raises and lowers the arm (Z and roller al Also attached to the lever M is a block m through which passes one end of a rod m*. The upper end of rod m is pivotally connected to a lever a", which serves to raise and lower arm if. A spring m below the block m and lock nuts at the lower end of rod m permit the lever M to move without moving lever a if desired, thereby preventing the forward feed of tapes from the hopper without stopping the main shaft or the reciprocating movements of arm a A rod N has an eye at its lower end through which passes the rod m, the eye of rod N being held to rod m by collars n 12/ The opposite end of rod N is pivotally attached to one end of bell crank lever 97? which is pivoted to the The opposite end of bell tached a rod n connected to a treadle 19,. which when depressed draws the rods m N upward and depresses the roller a lowering arm a A dog n carried by treadle n actuated by spring 17, locks treadle n in the depressed position, and holds arm a in the lower position until the operator again desires the tapes to feed when treadle n is operated to release treadle n.
The shaft P is positively and continuously driven from shaft J through gears 10, 11, 12, and shaft P in turn drives the rollers F and H by means of a gear 1 1 on shaft 'P which drives one of several transmitting gears .15, which in turn drive gears on the shafts of rollers F and H.
Splined to shaft P is a clutch member 10, which is adapted to engage a clutch member loosely j ournaled on shaft P between collars p 79 The clutch member 10 1s shifted into and out of engagement with member 77 sprocket chain p may be employed to in termittently drive a shaft 19 which, as shown in Fig. 12, in turn, by means of gears 20, 21 and 22, serves to drive'the rollers 03 6*, or, as shown in Fig. 1, chain 79 may be employed to drive the shaft of roller 6*, and motion is transmitted to roller (5 by gears 21, 20, 22.
The box or housing f is carried by arms R R which are vertically adjustable in ways 1" on the frame A. The arm R is preferably loop-shaped or goose-necked to provide for the passage of sheets where the tape is pasted near the center of the sheet. A cross bar r carries a roller 9 which rides upon a cam 1 carried by shaft J to reciprocate arms R R Attached to and moving with arm R is the stop bar f Attached to the arms R R are upwardly projecting rods 1 and 1* which engage the under side of table section 9 to lift said section.
As illustrated in Figs. 15 to 21, the work to be performed which is technically termed tipping the cloth to the end sheets, varies in detail; thus in Fig. 15, the sheet 32 is first folded with one edge projecting farther than the other, and by producing two paste lines on the tape 31 opposite edges of the tape are secured to opposite edges of the folded sheet; these sheets are then assembled with the signatures 33 comprising the body of the book as indicated in Fig. 20 and secured together by stitches, 30, through the opposite tapes, 81, after which the book is trimmed and the covers 34 are secured in position and the tapes and outer sheets pasted to the covers to form an inner facing for the covers. 4
As illustrated in Fig. 16, the tape 40 is secured at the point where the sheet 41 is folded by a single line of paste, and assembled as indicated in Fig. 19. As illustrated in Fig. 17 the sheet 50 is not intended to be folded until after the tape 51 has been secured thereto, said tape being preferably secured to the sheet by a single line of paste, after which the sheet is folded and assembled with another folded sheet 52, as. indicated in Fig. 18, the arrow indicating the direction of the stitches. Interchangeable rollers adapted to forming one or more paste lines are to be provided according to the style of work to be produced. The sheets and tapes are cut to the desired dimensions before entering the machine, thus avoiding waste of material, and enabling material which would otherwise be scrap to be utilized.
The mechanism herein illustrated and described is capable of considerable modification without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a mechanism of the character described, a tape hopper adapted to receive a plurality of independent tapes, mechanism to positively and successively feed said tapes from said hopper, intermittently-actuated pasting mechanism adapted to intermittently feed and apply paste to said tapes, mechanism to successively receive said tapes from the pasting mechanism and to feed them to a fixed position, an intermittently movable stop adapted to hold said tapes in said fixed position, mechanism to position independent sheets successively above said tapes while in fixed position, and intermittently actuated mechanism to press said sheets and tapes into contact with each other.
2. In a mechanism of the character described, a tape hopper adapted to receive a plurality of independent tapes, mechanism to positively and successively feed said tapes from said hopper, intermittently actuated pasting mechanism adapted to be intermittently actuated and to apply plural lines of paste to said tapes, mechanism to feed said tapes successively to a fixed position, mechanism to position independent sheets successively opposite said tapes while in fixed position, and intermittently actuated mechanism to press said sheets and tapes into contact with each other.
3. In a mechanism of the character described, a tape hopper adapted to receive a plurality of independent tapes, intermittently actuated mechanism adapted to successively feed said tapes from said hopper, independently and intermittently actuated mechanism adapted to feed said tapes and to apply paste thereto, mechanism adapted to receive said tapes from said pasting mechanism and to feed them successively to a fixed position, mechanism to position sheets successively opposite said pasted tapes when in fixed position, and mechanism to press said sheets and pasted tapes into contact with each other.
4. A bookbinders end-sheet-tipping machine comprising an intermittently actuated mechanism adapted to feed independent tapes in a horizontal direction and to apply paste thereto, mechanism to position said pasted tapes, mechanism to position sheets opposite and above said pasted tapes, and intermittently actuated mechanism to press said tapes and sheets into contact with each other.
5. In a mechanism of the character described, mechanism adapted to intermittently feed tape, intermittently driven mechanism adapted to apply paste to one face of said tape, mechanism to position the pasted tape, means to position independent sheets substantially parallel with and primarily out of contact with said tape, and mechanism to press said sheets and tape together.
6. In a mechanism of the character described, intermittently actuated mechanism adapted to successively feed independent tapes, intermittently actuated mechanism to apply paste to said tapes, mechanism to position said pasted tapes, means to successively position independent sheets opposite and primarily out of contact with said tapes, and mechanism to press said tapes and sheets together.
7 In a mechanism of the character described, intermittent tape feeding mechanism, intermittently driven pasting rollers, a plurality of rollers to feed the pasted tapes to position, a stop to hold the pasted tapes in position, a vertically movable table to support sheets above the tapes, and a series of rollers supported in movable bearings and adapted to press the sheets into contact with the pasted tapes and to feed the sheets and tapes from the machine.
8. In a mechanism of the character described, intermittently actuated tape feeding mechanism, intermittently actuated pasting mechanism, a plurality of tape feeding rollers located to receive the pasted tapes, a movable stop to position the pasted tapes, mechanism to position sheets opposite and out of contact with the pasted tapes, and a plurality of rollers supported in movable bearings and adapted to co-act with said feeding rollers to press the sheets and tapes into contact and feed the same from the machine.
9. In a mechanism of the character described, tape feeding and pasting mechanism, mechanism to feed the pasted tapes to position, a movable stop adapted to hold the pasted tapes in position, a table adapted to support sheets above and out of contact with the pasted tapes, and mechanism to press the sheets and pasted tapes into contact with each other and to feed the same from the machine.
10. In a mechanism of the character described, tape feeding and pasting mechanism, tape feeding rollers to feed pasted tapes, a movable stop to stop the pasted tapes in the desired position, a reciprocating table adapted to support sheets above and out of contact with the pasted tapes, mechanism to feed the sheets against said stop, and movable yieldingly supported rollers adapted to press the sheets in contact with the pasted tapes and to co-act with the pasted tape feeding rollers to feed the work from the machine.
