To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. COLE, .a citizen of the Unite(1 States, residin at Tenaly, in the county of Bergen and tate of New Jersey. have invented new and useful Improvements in Cans and Similar Recept-soles. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cans and similar receptacles, and more particularly to oil tained therein; but which, when turned in another position, advantageous for oiling or pouring, establish communication between the spout and the can and thus facilitate the oiling or pouring operations. Cans with spouts and valves for accomplishing the above purpose have been heretofore invented and several have been used to some extent,
but so' far as I am aware there has always been a leakage in such cans and a satis factory and absolutely non-leaking can of the above type has not, to my knowledge, been heretofore produced. Cans of the present type now on the market usually comprise many" separate and complicated parts which, when assembled, afford Joints and cracks for leakage of oil and which are usually diflicult of assemblages. There are probably a few cans of the above type having a small number of parts, but in all such cans that I am awa-re of there is lacking the element or combination of elements to efectually seal the can.'
It is the object of the present invention to provide a can of the type above indicated which can obviates all the objections above noted and which is at the same time exceedingly simple in construction and operation, consisting of relatively few simple parts and which is comparatively inexpensive in manufacture. 1
A further object of my invention is to provide a can having a pouring or oiling spout which will allow free oiling when properly adjusted without leakage around the spout and which whenproperly adjusted 'the can.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention comprises a can or similar receptacle having an outlet portion, a leak protector or restricting device for such outlet, here shown as a packing in the form of a washer of leather or other suitable material, and a retaining device for such ,restricting device or packing. This packing is provided with a small hole to form a seat for a closing device in the nature of a ballvalve or a valve provided with a curved surface' and having a passage therethrough and a spout in communication with this passage. The spout may be used as a handle to open the hole in the restricting device by turning the ball-valve in correct position. A casing for the ball-valve is provided, and this casing includes the washer and outlet portion of the can and is arranged to secure a tight connection between all the parts, the said casing having a peculiarly arranged slot for the spout, all'as more fully hereinafter set fort-h and as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings showing one form of a specific embodiment of my-invention and in the several views of which like reference characters designate cor'r'esponding parts, Figure 1 is an elevatiojn partly in section showing my can with the parts assembled, the spout being in oilig position; Fig. 2 shows a top. plan view of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan of the top section of my can with the oiling' spout turned in `osition to seal the can.
eferring to the drawings, numeral l designates the can proper, having the restricting portion or neck 2 with opening 3 theref in; The edge 4 of the outlet is preferably struck up from the inside in order to provide a sharp edge to form a tight jpint with the restricting device 5. This restrlcting device in the present instance is shown as' a washer-like piece of leather or similar substance having a relatively small hole 6. The flange-like portion adjacent to edge 4 on the neckA 2 of the can affords a bearing and support forthe main portion of the washerlike' device 5, and the hole 3 in such neck is large enough to permit filling of the can and larger than the opening 6 in the restricting device. This opening 6 1s made as small as possible for the proper operation been sued through the of the can. In order to secure the restricting device lin an absolutely tight and nonleakable relation'to theneck 2 and theedge 4 thereof, I provide a sleeve 7 or similar device arranged to envelop the neck 2 and having a flange portion 8 to engage the restrictin device 5 with opening 9 inside lof which t e ball-valve herelna'fter referred to seats.
The ball-valve 10 is of peculiar construction, consisting preferably of a ball of rubber or other flexible and soft material and having a passage 11 with spout l2 in alinement therewith. This ball of rubber is preferably molded around the spout so that they are one construction to all intents and purposes. I provide flange 13 on the spout to prevent any longitudinal movement of the ball with relation to the spout. This rubber is preferably not as hard as the usual vulcanized rubber but is of sufficient resilience to accomplish the purpose in view. The sleeve 7 has an external threaded portion .1 4 to receive and co-act with the threads 15 of a casing 16 to hold said casing in correct position. This casing 16 is provided with a longitudinal slot 17 extending part way across the top as at 18, and lthis top is shaped to accommodate the ball-valve 10.
To assemble the parts, after the can has stricting device 5 is placed on the edge 4 with its opening concentric with the opening of the neck and the sleeve 7 is securely fas'- tened in position. I prefer to secure this sleeve in place by means of a pipe-wrench so that the consumer will. ordinarlly be unable to loosen the restricting device. The spout 12 is passed through the portion 18 of the slot of the casing 16 and suchcasing is then threaded into place on the threads 14 of the sleeve 7 by turning said spout in said slot parallel with the top of the can and using the spout as a handle for this purpose. It is to be noted that the restricting device 5 is of suicient flexibility to give or ield to the curvature of the ball, while the ball affords suicient surface and resistance to the restricting device to close the openingl therein. The casing may be tightly forced upon the can to accomplish this, for the 1everage offered by the' spout serving as a handleaiords easy and free manipulation of the valve.
It is, ofcourse, to be understood thatl I do not limit m self ,to the particular specific embodiment ofy my inventlon herein shown, as such embodiment is lillustrative only and comprises o'ne'form of m can and spout. The material of the restricting device and valve may be altered to suit the purpose and exact shapes of the several parts may be changed as desired within the scope of my invention. I
The invention isapplicable to ordina-ry ball closes opening 3, the re-l pouring cans o'r cans with flexible bottoms or sides ordinarily usedfor oiling cans. What I claim is l. A recept-acle for dispensing fluids comprising an outlet portion provided with a sharp edge and having an opening therein, a restricting device for such opening having a small opening and arranged to form a tight joint with said sharp edge, retaining means for said restricting device, a closure for the opening in said restricting device consisting of a ball and having a hole therein and a spout attached in alinement with said hole, and a retaining casing provided with a slot in which the spout is adapted to rest, Whereby when the spout `is resting in said slot the the opening in said restricting device and the hole in portion a direct communication through said holes, ball and spout is established.
2. A can or similar receptacle comprising a body portion, having an opening therein, a restricting device 'for said opening comprising flexible material with an opening therein smaller when the spout is in linel withY said restricting deviceand outlet an attached outlet portion than the opening of the outlet portion and adapted to seat on said outlet portion, a valve for said restricting device consisting of a ball and attached spout, said ball having a passage in communication with said spout, and a casing to inclose said ball, restricting device and youtlet portion and arranged to form tight 4connections therebetween.
3. A can for dispensing uids comprisingy an outlet portion having an edge, a restricting device in contact with said edge having a tight joint therewith and also having a seat for a valve, a valve for. said restricting device comprising a revoluble member and a spout thereinarranged to revolve with said member, and a casing for said outlet portion provided with a slot for said spout and affording means for containing the valve and for adjusting its relation to said restricting device and also forming with the spout means for adjusting said casing over said outlet portion.
4. In a dispensing can, an 'outlet portion, valve means having a curved surface for controlling the iow of fluid therefrom,"and a exible restricti'ng device between the valve means and outlet .portion having a passage controlled by the curved surface of said valve means and adapted to yield to the vice having a tight joint with the outlet portion and affording a seat for said valve means.
5. In a dispensing can, an outlet portion, a ball valve for controlling the flow of iuid from said can, a spout having a flange seated in said ball valve to prevent longitudinal movement therein, and a iez'ble restricting `curvature of the valve, said restricting dedevice between the ball valve and outlet portion having a tight joint with the latter and affording a seat for the former and having a passage controlled by said ball valve in alinement with said spout.
6. A can or similar receptacle comprising a body portion, an attached outlet portion having an opening therein and threads on its exterior, a restricting device for said opening comprising la disk-like member of flexiblematerial provided with an opening smaller than the opening of said outlet portion and adapted to seat on said outlet -portion, a valve for said restricting device consisting of a ball and attached spout, a. sleeve to secure the restricting device in position,
said sleeve arranged to engage the threads of the outlet portion and having threads on its outer surface and an opening in its top larger than the opening of the restricting device, and a retaining casing for the valve comprising a member having internal threads to engage the threadspf said sleeve and having also a slot in its outer surface extending from the top down the side whereby the spout may be turned in said slot to close the can or positioned in alinement with the openings in the attached portion, sleeve and restricting device, to allow flow of fluid from said can. i
