-I'ETERS. PHOwuTN cGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
we can;
JOHN S. RUNY AN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 106,288, dated August 9, 1870.
COMBINED BROILER AND FURNACE.
The Schedulereferred to in these Letters Patent and rnaking part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be .it known that I, J OHN S. RUNYAN, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Combined Broiler and Furnace; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the annexed drawing making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of thebroiler.
Figure 2 is aside view of the broiler resting upon the flanged ring.
Figure 3 is sectional elevation, showing the broiler and flanged ring supported within a shell, of iron, which, by a downwardly-projecting flange around the central aperture in the bottom, directs the drippings from the broiling meat into the stove.
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation, a furnace and a supporting tripod being added to the parts shown in fig. 3, as also a lid for closing the top of the shell.
The same letters are used in all the figures in the designation of identical parts.
This invention relates to a culinary utensil, which I shall term a combined broiler and furnace.
The first part of my improvement consists in combining with a gauzed-wire broiler a flanged ring, the flange of which is to project into the hole in the top ofthe stove or range, and also having books by which to suspend it.
The second part consists in combining a shell or vessel with the foregoing parts, withinwhich the ring and broiler are suspended over the stove-hole, such vessel having a central aperture in its bottom, with a downwardly-prijecting flange around it to extend into such stove-hole, for the purpose of directing the drippings from the broiling meat into the firepot. I
- The third part consists in combining afurnace with the shell, flanged ring, and broiler, all as will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the annexed drawing Arepresents the broiler, which I prefer to make of two disks of wire gauze, of silitable fineness, with stout peripheral rings, hinged together at a point in their peripheries, and provided opposite to the hinge with handles, by which to manipulate them.
In use, the broiler is to'be supported upon a flanged ring, B, the aperture in which is made of such size that the downwardly-projecting flange B around it will fit the smallest-sized stove-hole, while the width of the ring must be suflicient to cover the largestsizcd stove-hole.-
The rim is constructed with u ward] ro'ectin witnesses.
'drippings from the broiling meat into the fire-pot.
In using the parts, the flanged ring, with the broiler upon it, is suspended within this vessel, by means of the hooks 13 ,011 the ring hooking over the upper edge of the vessel. I
A slot, 0, is out in the rim of the vessel 0, for the passage of the broiler-handles, and its top may be.
closed by a cover, 0 shown in fig. 4, if so desired, to serve as a reflector of the heat, and prevent the escape of the fumes'and smoke into the room.
1) represents a furnace,.which is to be suspended throngh the aperture in the bottomof the vessel 0, upon which bottom it is supported by a horizontal flange around its upper edge.
V Near-the open top end, the rim or shell of thefur- I uace has a number of perforations, (1 (Z, through which the smoke rising from the burning fuel upon its grated bottom, D, escapes, so as not to injure the flavor of i the meat by coming in contact therewith.
Whenever this furnace is employed the whole apparatus may be supported upon a tripod, E, with legs sntficiently high to keep the grated bottom of the furnace some distance above the floor, to admit of-the free access of air to the burning fuel.
For convenience in handling, the vessel 0 and furnace D are provided with bails. 7
What I claim as my invention, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a broiler with the flanged ring B, having hooks B, substantially as set forth.
1-. The combination of a broiler, flanged ring B, having hooks B and vessel 0, provided with a central aperture and a downwardly-projecting flange, 0 around the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of a broiler, flanged ring B, vessel 0, andfnrnace D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing JOHN S. RUTNYAN. Witnessesz \VALTER'MORRISON, JoHx Anars'ruoxe.
