ALFRED 1VL ZIEGLER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS ASSIGNOR TO THE A. ZIEGLER & SONS (10., OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IEASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 29, 1913.
Application filed March 10, 1909. Serial No. 482,535.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED M. ZIEGLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention relates to fasteners for stocking supporters and the like.
My invention may be readily understood by reference to the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 shows a fastener embodying my invention applied to an article to be supported; Fig. 2 is a face view of the fastener alone; Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section taken on the dotted line 44 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a section taken 011 the dotted line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The stocking fastener shown herein embodying my invention comprises a flat metallic loop 1 having a stocking receiving opening 2 and converged holding portions 8 forming a holding slit 4 for the article to be supported. The upper end of the fastener is provided with an elongated eye 5 through which may be passed the webbing of any suitable supporter. To retain the attaching portion of the article to be supported securely in the slit 4 referred to the lower end of the fastener is provided with a cap or supplemental loop 6, herein of metal, shaped to conform to the outer contour of the lower end of said loop 1 and having a converging slit 7 registering with the slit t described. This cap may be held in superposed position on the end of said loo-p by attaching ears 8 and 9 bent backward to engage the reverse face of said fastener and occupying corresponding notches in the outer edge of said loop. This cap doesnot rest throughout contiguous to said flat loop 1, but a little above the ends of the slits 4; and 7 said cap is crimped or elevated to present ridges 10 extending transversely to said slits and form with the portions of the fastener beneath it side pockets or lateral cavities 11 (see Fig. 5).
In use a portion of the article to be supported is passed through the opening 2 down into the registering slits 4 and 7. The fabric will be compressed more or less when crowded or nipped into said slits and consequently the bight or part (see Fig. 1) of the article which is not in immediate engagement with the fastener will bulge or spring laterally and some portions of the article will pucker up below the elevations of the cap while other portions will distend or bulge laterally to enter and occupy said pockets or lateral cavities 11 thereby cifectually anchoring and locking the stocking in the fastener. The fabric slides easily over the gradual upper incline of the elevation 10 and then seats itself below the more abrupt shoulder or lower incline thereof.
By my invention a fastener is provided which is simple in construction which is readily applied to the article to be supported and one that securely retains said article.
It will be understood that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiment shown herein but that modifications thereof might be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined by the appended claims.
Claims.
1. A fastener of the class described com= prising a member provided with a fiat end constituting a backing and having converging side portions forming between them a straight article receiving slit; and opposed narrow ridges on the face of said side portions at points spaced from the end of said slit, and extending transversely thereto and to said backing, said ridges being adapted to receive between them and compress a portion of the article adjacent the portion pinched in said slit to resist withdrawal of the article from the latter.
2. A fastener of the class described comprising a member having converging side portions forming between them an article receiving slit, and ridges fast on and protruding from said portions at opposite sides of said slit and in substantial alinenient with name to this specification in the presence of each other, each ridge and its side port-ion two subscnbing witnesses. forming between them a pocket for receiving a portion of the article adjacent that ALFRED ZIEGLER' pinched in said article receiving slit to resist WVitnesses:
withdrawal of the article from said slit. HENRY T. WILLIAMS, In testimony whereof, I have signed my ROBERT H. KAMMLER.
