To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES WV. Bnswlon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tiltonsville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Closet-Bowl, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in closet bowls.

The primary object of said invention is .to so construct a closet bowl that the outlet pipe may be conveniently reached at all times to remove any foreign material which would have a tendency to clog the same.

With the above and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bowl constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 3 an enlarged detailed sectional view, showing the opening in the bowl and the cap which forms a closure for said opening.

In the drawings, 10 designates the bowl or hopper which is of the usual construction, being provided with an outlet pipe 11, the bowl being flushed in the usual manner, water entering the same through the pipe 11. Arranged immediately above the outlet pipe 11 is an opening 12, the walls of which terminate in an upstanding lip or flange 13, said walls being formed with perforations 141 which communicate with the water supply, thus allowing the water to fill the pocket 15 which is formed by the upstanding lip 13. It will be seen that as the closet is flushed, the water which passes through the conduit 15 will flow through the apertures 14, thus filling said pocket. It will be noted that the opening 12 is immediately above the outlet 11, the upstanding flange 13 practically forming a continuation of said pipe, thus permitting a suitable instrument to be inserted within said opening to conveniently clean said pipe.

The opening in the bowl is preferably rectangular and is normally closed by a cap member 16 which member is provided with an annular extension or flange 17, said flange embracing the lip 13, the cap being further provided with a downwardly eX- tending hollow extension 18 which is embraced by the lip 13, said extension 18 being sufficiently spaced from the flange 17 that both the flange and the extension are spaced from the upstanding lip 13. Thus, it will be seen that as the water enters through the apertures 14, the space between the lip 13 and flange will be filled with water as well as the space between said flange and the body portion 19 of the bowl, thus forming a perfect liquid seal. The flange 17 is slightly reduced from the portion 20 of the cap, said portion 20 snugly fitting the body portion 19 of the bowl so as to hold the cap accurately centered with its flange 17 spaced from the walls of the pocket 15, the offset portion 16 of the cap resting on said body portion, thereby spacing the edge of the flange 17 from the por tion 22 of the bowl.

Attention is called to the fact that the cap forms an effective closure for the opening 12, which may be readily and conveniently removed when it is desired to have access to the pipe 11.

It is not absolutely necessary that the seal be made with water as the apertures 14 may be dispensed with, the space between the flange 17 and the bowl being filled with any liquid or solid, said liquid or solid being commingled with a suitable deodorizer.

Not only does the enlarged portion 20 constitute a centering means but it also cooperates with the flange or offset portion 16 to prevent splashing or leakage past the cap while water is circulating around flange 17 and downwardly through the opening 12 into the pipe 11.

The many advantages of a construction of this character will be clearly apparent, as it will be noted that applicant provides convenient means which permit of the ready access to the outlet pipe, said outlet pipe being conveniently ,cleaned without the use of specially constructed tools. Particular attention is called to the peculiar construction and arrangement of the cap member, the closure being such as to form a perfectly sealed opening, regardless of whether the hopper be filled with fluid or not. It will also seen that the bowl may be constructed in accordance with the invention Without materially affecting its shape or the cost of production, the cap member being simple in construction and easily manufactured.

Importance is attached to the fact that the bottom end of the closure is ccncaved so as to conform with the curvature of the upper or arched portion of the pipe 11, this being clearly apparent by referring to Fig. 3 of the drawing.

It has been found in actual practice that, unless the lower end of the closure is thus shaped and located, there will be no syphonic action within the bowl. By thus arranging the closure no air pocket is formed within the upper portion of pipe ll and, by providing the water outlets 14, there is an overflow from the water seal during each flushing operation and any air which may have accumulated in the seal or between the closure and the top of pipe 11 will thus be driven from position, thereby insuring positively the proper syphonic action.

A closet bowl formed With an outlet pipe having an opening in the top portion thereof provided in its wall with water inlet openings in constant communication with the water supply, said wall of the top opening merging, at its lower end, into an up: standing lip forming a continuous pocket therearound, and a cap insertible into top opening and having a depending reduced extension insertible loosely into the space defined by the lip, there being a flange depending from the cap andspaced from and surrounding said extension, said flange being insertible into the pocket, said cap having an enlarged portion extending there around and fitting snugly against the upper portion of the wall of the top opening to hold the extension and flange of the cap con centric with and spaced from the inner and outer faces respectively of the lip, and a flange extending from the top portion of the cap and bearing on the bowl, the lower end of the extension on the cap being curved to constitute a continuation of the wall of the outlet pipe.
